Don Pepin Garcia Cuban Classic Robusto (5 x 50)

Like the Fonesca “Habana” line (see my previous post on that misguided foray), this cigar doesn’t measure up to its own hype. Unlike the Fonseca, however, this cigar has no redeeming qualities. The burn is uneven, the draw is too loose, and the taste is bitter. I had high hopes that Don Pepin could make an above-average cigar other than the Serie JJ until I tried these. I thought the first one was just a fluke, so I tried another. Big mistake. Easily two of the worst cigars I’ve had all year. To compare these to Cuban cigars is a joke. Hell, to call them cigars at all is a stretch. What happened?

Wow. People generally like this cigar. Was is too “dark” for you? Is this a maduro?
Yeah, I’ve heard nothing but great things about Pepin Garica’s cigar. The cigar boards are starting to form cults around Pepin.
I’ve heard the same. People love the Pepins. I’m gonna try these myself. Moneybag$ must have had a bad one. Of course, I generally dislike ratings because one mans 10 is another mans 2.
I think your humidication must have way off…how llong did you let these age?
I think you’re off base here with the Don Pepins. I agree with Bart…check your humidor conditions. Something is not right. Also, check to make sure these cigars have aged in your box for a good 4 months. They are GREAT smokes if you store them right. A true classic.
Your humidity was obviously too high. I buy these by the box, and they are wonderful. Criollo and corojo in these quantities need less humidity. I keep them at 70% and pull whatever I want to smoke next week into a 65% humi. Ptherwise they will be bitter and have burn issues.
Said it before and I’ll say it again, the humidification must be off. WAY OFF. Don Pepins are freaking great cigars. Better than all but the ultra best.
I agree - I smoked two of these as well and they fell apart and tasted terrible! Maybe there was a bad batch of them floating around cuz these two came from the same humidor all of my other smokes are stored in, yet only these Pepins were bad. Yuck!
My brothers and I smoked them and thought they were tremendous. Flavorful, powerful, spiced smoke which had the pleasant note of cherry peel midway. Creamy smoke with white ash. Closest to a cuban that I have seen, including some cubans.
Might have been a bad batch.
I am smoking one of these right now, and so far the cigar has been uneventful and lacks flavor that I was hoping for. I, like yourself, was looking for something much more than what I got.
