DM Preview: The God of Fire

Posted by Uncle Moneybag$ on 03 Aug 2007 | Tagged as: Dominican Mornings

Back in June, Brother Dicksbain and I lawfully purchased God of Fire Robustos at Casa Fuente during the Uncle Moneybags Mo-Money Bachelor Party/Gar Festival.  Good times.  We didn’t get a chance to smoke them during the wedding festivities, so we’ve hung onto them for a special occasion. While there’s nothing particularly “special” about this weekend, we’ve decided to smoke them on Saturday morning anyway–if only to “celebrate” that you don’t need a reason to have a super-premium smoke. We’ll be doing a review, for sure. Brother Dicksbain went with Don Carlos’ God of Fire creation, whereas I went with the Carlito (which has a toothy Cameroon wrapper instead of a Sumatran wrapper).  This will be the first of either kind for the brothers.

Dominican Mornings - July 27-29, 2007

Posted by Uncle Moneybag$ on 30 Jul 2007 | Tagged as: Dominican Mornings

Happy DMs to our loyal readers. This weekend marked the return to traditional Dominican Mornings, now that Uncle Moneybags is back to work. Uncle Moneybags went to see the Simpsons Movie and celebrated his dad’s graduation, while Brother Dicksbain enjoyed a fantastic brew festival. Much BF2 was had between events. Brother Dicksbain is a remarkable 4000 points ahead of Uncle Moneybags, though Uncle Moneybags is now 70% of the way to a new rank. Good times.

    Topics Discussed:

Dad’s graduation and killer watch present
Simpsons Movie (a riot, though not without its flaws)
Uncle Moneybags’ Mo-Money Quad-core Mega Machine (forthcoming)
Roomba for the garage? Scooba for the floors?
Battlefield 2 (great game, but plagued by hackers)
Work woes (very minimal right now)
Sister-L’s upcoming wedding
Lego Indiana Jones Trilogy
Cleveland Indians (running strong, with the Angels over Detroit)
Brewery Festivals - Stone in Cleveland?

    Gars Smoked:

Gurhka Legend Silver Series
Gurhka Ancient Warrior Toros
Cigar.com purple and blue lables
Perdomo Cameroon Anniversary Perfecto
Casa Fuente Belicoso

Uncle Moneybag$ takes the plunge!

Congratulations to Uncle Moneybags on his recent wedding in Paso Rubles, CA last weekend. We had some great times and smoked some fine cigars to celebrate. Before the wedding, we hit up Casa Fuente in Las Vegas. While we found some of the smokes their above retail prices, they had an amazing stock of every Fuente cigar you could imagine. We smoked the 21-ESG Robusto and purchased a few dozen smokes.

Dominican Mornings - One Year Extravaganza

Posted by Uncle Moneybag$ on 06 May 2007 | Tagged as: Dominican Mornings

leafy_bday.jpg
Congratulations to Leafytimes.com for making it one full year! It’s been a great year in gars for us. Our palates have exploded, and we’ve tried literally every cigar that we wanted to try (and, sadly, some we wish we didn’t). A year ago, we were singing the praising of JRcigar.com and raving about Macanudos and Montecristos. Today, it’s Padron 1964s, Cubans, and Opus Xs. Good times. I don’t know if there are any other great gars out there that we haven’t tried, but I’m sure there will be in the future. And one thing’s for sure: leafytimes.com will be around for years to come. God Bless Gars.

Topics Discussed:
One year anniversary of Leafytimes.com
Uncle Moneybags’ semi-retirement extravaganza (yes, I finally made it out)
Home improvement projects (garage floors, wireless internet set up, patching walls, bbq set up, etc.)
Nintendo WII (great system)
Xbox 360 purchase (forthcoming) for Dead Rising and Gears of War
22″ widescreens for computer
Del Taco in foreign lands (Michigan, Toledo Ohio)
VegGar 2007 1.0 (it’s closer than you think)
Becks Light - good cause you can drink 12 and barely feel it

Gars Smoked:
Oliva Serie O Robusto
Maxx Fatty Robustos (x2)
Cuban Partagas
Don Garcia Serie JJ (x2)
Montecristo Serie V Mini Churchill (last one from over a year ago to celebrate the anniversary)
La Flor Dominica L700 (same)
Pryme Toro
La Aurora Preferido Cameroon Robusto (last one from this cherry box)

Dominican Mornings - April 20-22, 2007

Posted by Uncle Moneybag$ on 22 Apr 2007 | Tagged as: Dominican Mornings

Happy DMs. This is the first post for all of April 2007–what can I say, we’ve been busy. Uncle Moneybags is completing his move to South OC; indeed, this is his last week of working at the job he’s been bitching about since before we even started this website. That’s not to say that we haven’t been having our regular DM calls. In fact, we’ve made every weekend (sometimes at alternate times), smoked some fine gars, discussed many home improvement projects and some other things. For example, this weekend, Brother Dicksbain refinished his decks and bought a pressure washer to boot. And Uncle Moneybags “bic-ed” his head for the first time ever–loving it.

On a more important note, this coming Saturday marks the one-year anniversary of Leafytimes.com. Considering the success of our last blog, which only lasted five months, I never thought this one stood a chance to make it a year. But it did. Because gars are great. To the many memories to come.

Cigars Smoked (among others):
Oliva Serie O Toro
Don Pepin Garcia (Standard) Toro
La Aurora Preferido Robusto
Gurhka Napolese Warrior
Gurkha Black Puro
Montecristo Serie V Mini Churchill (the last of a box purchased in 2005!)
Don Pepin Garcia Serie JJ (fantastic smoke)

Topics Discussed:
Xbox 360 Elite purchase (with Gears of War AND Dead Rising!!!)
Satellite vs. Cable
Uncle Moneybags’ Mo-money mega Automatic Outdoor Lights
Hudgar 2.0 (sponsored by Caesar’s Palace, June 19-20, 2007)
Lawn care = full time job
Napster vs. XM
Stone Brews & Leffes
Furniture Delivery - no show
Uncle Moneybags Mo-Money Vacation Extravaganza!
Garage Floor Epoxy — where Uncle Moneybags’ Home Improvement Project Begins
(Note: we did NOT discuss work woes–who cares anymore?)

God Bless America

Dominican Mornings - March 30-April 1, 2007

Posted by Uncle Moneybag$ on 02 Apr 2007 | Tagged as: Dominican Mornings

Happy Dominican Mornings. The brothers are doing relatively well. Uncle Moneybags spent most of the weekend at his mo-money-mega mansion, complete with a stop along the way at the Classic Del Taco and Circle-K. Bought a power drill, installed a door lock, fixed some other door handles, and only broke a continuous loop on his blinds in the process–doh! Meanwhile, Brother Dicksbain enjoyed the warmer weather in Cleveland while painting his house and enjoying some fine ESV Perdomo Maduros. Good times.

      Topics Discussed:

Work Woes
Xbox 360 Elite Edition
Eve Online: no gaming going on
28 days/weeks/years later and alternate endings
Washing the Rx-8
Baseball–Cleveland Indians vs. Angels
Hudgar 2.0 - the return
Wedding Plans for Uncle Moneybags–vegas trip in the works
Cuban cigars - truly the best

Dominican Mornings - March 9-11, 2007

Posted by Uncle Moneybag$ on 11 Mar 2007 | Tagged as: Dominican Mornings

Another week, another set of Dominican Mornings. Good times. Brother Dicksbain skipped out on Saturday morning to go shopping at Ikea (a short 4-hour drive to Pittsburgh), while Uncle Moneybags went to do the final walkthrough on his mo-money mega mansion in Dove Canyon. Uncle Moneybags donated one of his famed Cubans to his realtor, but no worries–there are still 9 left for the upcoming wedding/Hudgar festivities. Uncle Moneybags assisted Sister-L in purchasing a new 328i BMW sedan (and got to see the 335i coupe again!). He even turned down a chance to drive a black hardtop M6 (wtf?). Other than work, life seems pretty good. Can’t wait to get back to the OC–even if it is a little more south than where we’re from.

Gars Smoked:

    Cuban Montecristo No. 2 (by far, the best smoke I’ve ever had, this time while watching the Sopranos on DVD);
    La Aurora Preferido Cameroon Robusto (while Sister-L was filling out the financial forms for her new kick-ass car);
    CAO Gold Robusto (in between work, sucks);
    Oliva Serie G Toro (after work, while drinking!);
    Padron Serie 1926 No. 35 Maduro (an amazingly strong smoke, on Friday night with Brother Dicksbain);
    CAO Gold Carona Gorda
    Gurkha Dos Capas Barber Pole - an excitingly complex smoke
    Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur 1066 Merlin - saved this one for over a year before smoking; amazing; reminds me of the old Firefly days in the Spruce place; we discovered these almost two years ago to the date at Vendomes
    Montecristo White Toro - a terrific morning smoke

      Topics Discussed:

    New car purchase for Sister-L;
    Warmer weather in Cleveland makes for some fine smokes;
    ESV 1991 Perdomo purchase by Brother Dicksbain — a sweet deal on some fine cigars;
    Xbox360–when will they put the HDDVD unit inside the box? Gears of War: great game;
    Uncle Moneybags mo-money mega mansion — closing on Monday!; moving date uncertain
    Uncle Moneybags’ Work woes — almost done, searching for new job;
    Dicksbain’s BBQ and late night Y2K/Daylight Savings Time Work
    Angles Baseball - no one’s left; time to rebuild the team; Kennedy back to the Cardinals; Erstad’s gone too; fatty Molina remains?
    Odds of David Eckstein winning a World Series MVP award 5 years ago (a billion to one)
    CAO Sopranos Cigars - surprisingly good for a marketing gimmick

    Beers Drank:
    Coors Light;
    Corona Light;
    (Brother Dicksbain to add more here…)

    Video Games Played:
    EVE: Online
    BF1942: Secret Weapons of World War II
    Dreamfall - the Longest Journey (watched the end again)
    GTA San Andreas - great game, but no longer working on Uncle Moneybags’ system
    KOTOR - ok, I didn’t play, but just thinking about playing this game almost 4 years ago always brings a smile to my face.

Dominican Mornings - March 2-4, 2007

Posted by Uncle Moneybag$ on 05 Mar 2007 | Tagged as: Dominican Mornings

I am sitting here smoking an authentic Montecristo No. 2 Habana, and it’s probably the best cigar I’ve ever had. I have no idea what makes Cuban cigars so good, but I am forever greatful to my friend–who got an entire box of No. 2s for me for dirt cheap. The packaging and bands leave no doubt in my mind: this is the real deal. And they are wonderful. I am going to smoke 10, sell 5 to my good friend at work, and save 10 for my wedding days. Oh, what a joy these are to smoke. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking a box up.

Otherwise, it was a good weekend. Lots of wedding stuff, but fun: a nice trip to SLO with no traffic either up or down, and some terrific wines. Uncle Moneybags’ wedding will no doubt be a blast–hopefully topped off with some OpusXs and some fine Habanos. Life is good, but work still sucks. I can’t wait to move into my house in a few weeks.

Brother Dicksbain took his CISSP test this weekend. Sounds like he did well, too. And he tried an ESV Ashton, which is basically a sun-grown OpusX. Topped it off with a Cx2 and a Criollio while Uncle Moneybags’ traversed the 154. Good times. God Bless Dominican Mornings….

Cigars Smoked:
Montecristo No. 2 Havana (x2!)
La Aurora Preferido Robusto (x1)
Cigar.com Cameroon Torpedo (not a bad smoke)
CAO Gold Corona Gorda
Gurkha Boer
Padron 1926 Serie No. 35 Maduro
Ashton ESV Churchill
CAO Cx2
CAO Gold Torpedo

Topics Discussed:
Wedding plans
Cuban cigars
Simpsons Movie
CISSP test
Work woes
Carl’s Jr. vs. Hardy’s
Uncle Moneybags’ move to the OC
CAO Vison Box - Tron-like joke, with dim lights and inconsistent humidor readings (nice try Tim!)
Viva La Revolution!

Dominican Mornings - February 23-25, 2007

Posted by Uncle Moneybag$ on 25 Feb 2007 | Tagged as: Dominican Mornings

Happy Dominican Mornings.  Brother Dicksbain celebrated his return from a business trip with a CAO Pato and a Sun Ripened Oscuro, while Uncle Moneybags enjoyed a Padron 1926 Serie No. 35 Maduro and an Arturo Fuente Don Carlos Robusto.  Good times.  Uncle Moneybags is nearing the closing date for his house, still hating work, but surviving.   He was able to visit “P-town” this weekend, which included a visit to Vendomes, our favorite seventies-themed liquor store.  The prices there are terrible, but the parking is ample.

Topics Discussed:
Retro gaming and Xbox 360 purchase (waiting for HDMI version with HD DVD player and price drop)
CISSP test for Brother Dicksbain - studying hard
Uncle Moneybags’ mo’ money mega mansion
Ergonomics Computer Arms - for that ultra slick desktop
Freezing rain in Cleveland; weather much nicer in Nashville
Chilly in SoCal - high 50s
CAO Vision - all the hype, and no sales
Work Woes
Living in RSM
Simpsons Movie

Gars Smoked:
CAO Crillio Pato
Sun Ripened Oscuro
La Aurora Preferido Robusto (x2)
Arturo Fuente Don Carlos Robusto
Sol Cubano Connecticut
CAO Gold Corona Gorda
CAO Italia Caio
Padron 1926 Serie No. 35 Maduro

Dominican Mornings - February 9-11, 2007

Posted by Uncle Moneybag$ on 14 Feb 2007 | Tagged as: Dominican Mornings

With Uncle Moneybags’s housing search over (see below), the brothers were able to take some time out this weekend to enjoy some special cigars, including several Cubans from Brother Dicksbain’s travels.  (For any “federales” that may be reading this, relax: they were preembargos!)  Of course, the weather in Cleveland was unforgiving, while the weather in So Cal was nice, but windy.  All-in-all a rather laid back weekend, free of work and full of carefree smoking.

Gars Smoked:
Padron 1926 Serie No. 35 Maduros (x2)
CAO Gold Corona Gordas (x3)
Gurkha Castle Hall Reserve Toro
Arturo Fuente Don Carlos
Leon Jimines Leonenes (SP?)
Gurkha Barber Pole Mega-gar

Topics Discussed:
Eve Online: the return, the redemption; Brother Dicksbain gives in and orders
Work Woes - plentiful for Uncle Moneybags still (but the end is in sight)
Uncle Moneybag’s Finds a House in Rancho Santa Margarita, marking the beginning of his triumphant return to Orange County!
Xbox on the new 62″ DLP
Problems with cigar.com weekly special order page (shame, cause it was a good deal)
Housing inspectors, insurance, escrow–where does the fun end?

Dominican Mornings - February 2-4, 2006

Posted by Uncle Moneybag$ on 04 Feb 2007 | Tagged as: Dominican Mornings

Happy Dominican Weekends! This weekend marked a return to the classic DMs we’ve enjoyed in the past. For the past few weeks, Uncle Moneybags has been super-busy looking at houses all over the OC, leaving Brother Dicksbain on his own. Rest assured, we’ve been having gars in the mornings, but the cold weather and short timeframes have left us without enough material to justify a full post. But shame on us. We should be posting anyway.

Enough said. This weekend, Uncle Moneybags started off with another Padron Serie 1926 No. 35 Maduro–a super-premium from his year-end “bonus” box. Brother Dicksbain had a La Aurora Dominican Robusto–a testament to how cold it has been in Ohio (this cigar was from a deal over a month ago, proving how few gars Dicksbain has had over the past few weeks). There are bound to be many-a-gar during the super bowl as well. Unofficially, we’re both rooting for the Colts.

Topics Discussed:
Work Woes - better for Dicksbain (even though he’s working this weekend); still miserable for Uncle Moneybags, but the end is in sight and the hours haven’t been that bad;
Eve Online - Brother Dicksbain makes his triumphant return to this “stellar” game (bad pun, sorry);
Blingy-blingy 62″ DLP purchase by Brother Dicksbain, how jealous I am;
Uncle Moneybags’ house shopping–5 Saturdays in a row, over 40 properties, 5 bids, 2 offers, including one from today!
OC housing market (see above) - with rising interest rates sure to “break” arms, where can it go but down?
Dreamfall: The Longest Journey - great game, though a little short, low on gameplay, and disappointing in the end; terrific soundtrack, though derivative of other works;
Prey - the only first person shooter that has Art Bell voiceovers and doesn’t suck… until you realize it’s the same level over and over again; sort of a snoozer by the end.
A used car specifically for car gars (wouldn’t need to have much other than an engine, working windows and a working heater to replicate SoCal weather), though neighbors might object to Datsun from 1982 sitting in driveway….

Gars Smoked:
1926 Serie Padron No. 35 Maduro
CAO Maduro Churchill (amazing smoke for the price!)
La Aurora Dominican Robusto
La Aurora Preferido Robusto (wonderfully complex, like smoking dark chocolate with orange peel)
CAO Brazillia Churchill
Gurkha Expedition Toro
CAO Criollo Robusto - Uncle Moneybags still doesn’t like that much
(more to come!)

God Bless DMs!
