God of Fire - 2005 Robusto by Don Carlos

Posted by Dicksbain on 05 Aug 2007 | Tagged as: Weekly Specials

666.png

While my brother opted for the 2005 Robusto made by Carlitos, I went with the more senior Don Carlos edition. We purchased these at Casa Fuente in Vegas about 2 months ago for a staggering $35 a piece ($45 if the new tax passes…). They’ve been resting in the humidor for about two months waiting to be smoked. We decided to just go for it and smoke them this weekend without waiting for a monumental occasion.

Apperence was nearly flawless; only a slight hole was visible on the dark sumatra wrapper. Presentation is top notch. They come in little coffins and if you’re lucky enough to purchase a box, it’s a humidor box.

Aroma is distinctly Fuente. Cedar, oak, and almond were the predominant tones. It was very similar to an Opus X, but with a little more spice to the complexity.

This was a fantastic cigar. If it was $12, I give it a perfect 10 score. Unfortunately, it was priced far higher and thus I have to knock it down to a mortal level. Still, if you see one of these for purchase, don’t hesitate. If you can find or afford a box of these, you are truly a God of something.

La Flor Dominicana Mysterio Sampler

Posted by Dicksbain on 02 Aug 2007 | Tagged as: Weekly Specials

Tinderbox has a great special on the La Flor Dominicana Mysterio Sampler. I’m a huge fan of everything La Flor. If you liked the “chisel”, you’ll love these.

The Mysterio Sampler represents the impeccable quality and experienced craftsmanship of La Flor Dominicana. The unique shape and construction of the Mysterio has broken new ground in the industry. Dominican fillers and a Sumatra binder blend to create a flavorful smoke that is only enriched by its unique wrappers. A Connecticut Broad Leaf maduro wrapper caps both ends, and a spicy natural Nicaraguan wrapper encases the rest of the medium to full bodied Mysterio.

JR Weekly Special: General Cigar Sampler

Posted by Dicksbain on 18 Jul 2007 | Tagged as: Weekly Specials

Weekly Special: General Cigar Sampler
Valid thru Midnight, Wednesday, July 25, 2007 while supplies last.

From JR:

Last year a major account of La Flor de Copan, the huge Honduran factory owned by ALTADIS, abruptly moved their brand to the Dominican Republic leaving the factory with a huge number of packed and finished boxes as well as other cigars in various stages of production. This left the factory in a state of disarray and…

Blah blah blah…you get the picture.  JR is pushing these pretty hard…

From Cigars International:

Gurkha Expedition Series Toro, 20 Cigars only $39.99
64% off silliness (MSRP: $112)

Gurkha’s Expedition blend is made with extensively aged Dominican long-leaf tobaccos grown in the Cibao Valley, the country’s premier growing region. Each cigar is coated with a scintillating Connecticut-seed wrapper grown in Ecuador, then box-aged for at least 2 years. Toothy in texture, yet smooth and covered with natural oils, the Expedition delivers ample flavor. Medium in body and rich in flavor, the 6″ x 50 Toro is smooth as silk with toasty notes of nuts and a touch of peppery sweetness.

At just $2 apiece, this is a golden opportunity to experience Gurkha, the Rolls Royce of Cigars, at a ludicrous introductory price.

Weekly Special Roundup

Posted by Dicksbain on 02 Nov 2006 | Tagged as: Weekly Specials

weeklyr.jpgThis week started off pretty strong with the Cigar International deal of Cinco Vegas. While I’m not a huge fan of these cigars, Moneybag$ swears by them. See his recent review here. JR offered their Montecruz Negras again. I’ve had these and they’re OK for a bargain, everyday smoke. I just have so many of those types of bargain gars in my humidor that the thought of any more just doesn’t sit well with me. Cigar.com finished the week with a fair deal of H Upmann Tubos. Perhaps good for the coming holidays/travel. A bit too pricey for me as I’m not an H. Upmann fan. Overall, a pretty mediocre deal week. I would love to see some CAO, A.Fuente, Montecristo, etc. deals…it rarely happens given that they sell well without the discounts.  Maybe it free ashtray time again…

Uncle Moneybag$ Halloween Horror

Posted by Uncle Moneybag$ on 29 Oct 2006 | Tagged as: Weekly Specials

JRCIGAR Halloween HorrorI agree with Brother Dicksbain on this one: JR really let us down this year. While I did not get quite as bad a group of sticks as he did, my stack was far more mediocre than last year’s bundles. I ordered two of these deals. They were mirror images of each other - almost no variety. I suspect most people got what I got, which included:

JR “Ultimate” Toros (maduro and natural)
La Especial Robustos
One La Gloria Cubana
A few Flor De Allones
La Primadora Toro
Berring Tubo
Flor de Copan Maduro Rothchild

Quality on these mediocre cigars was far below average, even for JR. And the filler crap, a Montecristo Windbreaker fit for a 10-year-old and a La Gloria Cubana hat (yawn), was useless. I wish I had purchased one of the Halloween specials over at cigar.com. Now THAT is an amazing deal:

5 Gurhka TITANS (amazing value in their own right–the box of 16 sells for $400.00);
5 Cinco Vegas Maduros (one of the best maduros I’ve ever had)
5 C10 Aniversario Cusano Robustos (great smoke)
5 Cigar.com Maduras (ok ,so these are the filler gars)
1 Humidor jar with humidification unit.

All for $79.95 + 5.95 shipping.
That said, you have to keep in mind the JR deal only costs $40.00, so it’s not a horrible deal. I just didn’t get anything that great this time around. There should have been at least one “great” or two “very good” gars (by way of contrast, last year I got 4 TTT trinidads, a Macaudo, and a Montecristo platnium in EACH of my deals–and the average gar was a Romeo y Julieta!)
Maybe this was just a bad year. I will probably give JR another chance, but I’m getting close to giving all my business to someone else. Famous-smoke is far better as to everyday prices, and cigar.com is this year’s “master of the deals.” If anyone from JR cigar is reading this, I ask you: what happened?
